10/6/16New Work: Justina Blakeney X Schoolhouse Electric
I’ve been drooling over the hardware and lighting at Schoolhouse Electric for years so when they asked if I wanted to design a collection of bedding for them I got really excited. The Portland-based boutique has a very cool sensibility and it’s very different from mine. That was one thing I found so exhilarating about the partnership–trying to figure out how I was going to my Jungalow vibe to Schoolhouse — who’s modern/industrial thing is pretty tight?
Schoolhouse gave me a jumping off place by telling me that the above pic that I snapped a few years ago of eucalyptus and grapefruit was one of their favorite works of mine so that seemed like a good place to start.
The eucalyptus is kind of a great subject because there are so many different kinds with vastly differently shaped leaves, seeds, pods and flowers. I drew several versions of the pattern before landing on the one that we all thought was a good marriage between our styles.
Above you can see a few of the iterations of the pattern that we did before landing on the perfect one.
We gave the pattern a dark background a decided to call it Eucalyptus nights — and even the name makes me feel a little bit more relaxed.
The pattern is screen-printed onto cotton percale fabric in Portugal. It’s available as bed sheets, duvet and shower curtain.
I’m in love with the way that the set looks in Emily Katz‘ bedroom.
